Today‘s cars are equipped with radar sensors, which provide precise information about the distance, speed and angle to surrounding objects on the road. This information is essential for modern driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control or brake assistance systems. Further, it enables future autonomous driving features. For several reasons, radar sensors are often mounted right behind the bumper of the car, which causes unwanted signal reflections from such. These reflections lead to a severe sensitivity degradation of the radar.

In this work two concepts for cancelation of the bumper reflections, the so-called short-range leakage, are proposed. The developed statistical signal processing techniques enable a holistic implementation of the concept within a monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC). The concept is fully verified based on a hardware prototype, wherein the digital signal processing is performed in real-time on a field programmable gate array (FPGA).
